Property Management – Mixed Views

What is it about property management that when mentioned creates expressions of terror, horror, incredulous looks that say…”Oh my goodness, why would you”?

I just don’t get it. The looks I mean.

Property Manager’s I’m sure you will agree with me that you receive these looks from sales consultants, business owners, administrators and can you believe all within our own fabulous industry, Real Estate.

I have no doubt that all property managers can relate to the sheer panic and havoc created when a property management client phones or walks into the agency and the property manager is out. It’s like…quick run for cover everyone, it’s for property management. Perhaps if we stand perfectly still they won’t notice us, or maybe if I don’t look up at them they will just go away. Oh the stories are endless.

So then, what’s wrong with being a property manager? Why do they feel sorry for us? I’m loud and proud to be involved in the property management industry. I toiled as a property manager for nearly ten years, learning, improving, developing, creating and making sure I hung in there long enough to ‘Make a Difference’.

Make a difference in the lives of my clients. Owners and tenants, make them feel special, valued and very welcome. Make a difference for my boss and fellow workers and make a difference for me.

Now I’m here to make a difference in the world of property management. Property Managers it’s time to shake ourselves out of complacency and feeling comfortable with old habits, cause you not what…it just aint working. Time to turn off Easy Street and cruise on up to the entry onto the 21st Century Highway, where technology, systems, consistent custmer service and professionalism are no longer taken for granted, they are demanded by our very knowledgeable clients.

Property managers it’s time to look within and far into the distance. We have a really exciting journey ahead and I’m looking forward to sharing where the Highway is taking us.

Come join me for the journey and stand as one as we re-invent our valuable service to the real estate industry and our clients.

  1. Good work Jo, I think the blog is a tremendous idea and I hope it gets utilised by our property managers. A great resource to let loose their frustrations and queries. I will pass the details onto our offices in SA and push them all to subscribe. Good work yet again.

  2. Good thinking 99! A big hello from SA will have loads of interesting tales to tell down the track as I specalise in holiday rental so nice to have somwhere to go and have a bit of a chat when needed. Amazing experience Jo what an example you set, no boundries to where the humble property manager of today can be in the future!

  3. Welcome to “next generation” Property Management! Thanks Jo for taking the initiative. Hopefully this will add to it being a GREAT day at Harcourts for all our hardworking PM’s, giving them an outlet to share their experiences. Hello to all readers across Harcourts from one in the wild West of the land!

  4. Great idea, I’m with you all the way. There is only one point that I want to make. More than anything I think all PM need to clear their minds of their “old habits” and remember that none of us know the best way, but collectively we would. So we need to open our minds to new ideas, learn form others and our own knowledge and then put our learning in to practice. Technology, practices and systems are wonderful tools that we all need to use, learn from the young, the old and the middle aged and people will look at us in a different light and we can be eaven prouder of what we do and where we are heading.

  5. Im with you Jo, as you know I LOVE BEING A PROPERTY MANAGER!! and slowly the views of others are changing… once we were seen as the villan but slowly we are being seen as people with very rewarding working positions and careers.
